How to Catch Tarpon

Tarpon are low-light predators built for the fight, not the plate. Here's the temperature window, the baits, and the gear that lands a Silver King.

Tarpon (Megalops atlanticus) were named for their eyes — Megalops means "large eye." Their retinas run on a daily clock: cone cells contract by day, rod cells stretch out at night, tuning the fish for low light every dawn and dusk. Add a swim bladder wired directly to the esophagus, letting them gulp air and survive water too oxygen-poor for almost anything else. The result is a fish that hunts where other predators can't follow and spots its prey before being spotted.

Almost none of this is about eating tarpon. Florida law makes it catch-and-release past a certain size, and most anglers release every one regardless — the appeal is the fight, not the plate.

Tarpon Habitat

Tarpon range both sides of the Atlantic — Nova Scotia to Brazil, Mauritania to Angola — from the surface down to about 130 ft, usually under 50 ft. They tolerate almost any salinity, which is why the same species shows up in three very different settings by age:

  • Juveniles — mangrove-lined tidal creeks, marshes, and closed ponds with stagnant, low-oxygen water most predators can't survive; a tarpon's air-gulping habit turns that water into a private nursery.
  • Sub-adults and adults — channels, tidal passes, and open flats where mangrove roots meet deeper water. Passes concentrate baitfish and crabs on the tide swing and are the best adult structure.
  • Seasonal shift — Florida's coastline holds fish all summer; as water cools, they concentrate in South Florida for winter.

Tarpon Water Temperature

Tarpon presence tracks water temperature closely, and the preferred band shifts by season.

That bottom row has a hard number behind it: every monitored juvenile left its home creek once water dropped below roughly 68–72°F (20–22°C) — a clean, repeatable cutoff, not a vague trend.

When Tarpon Bite

Light does more work here than any other factor, and real physiology backs it up. That circadian retina switch retunes the eye at every dawn and dusk. Juvenile tracking data confirms what that buys them: activity peaks at dawn and dusk, then drops off at night.

Tide matters just as much: incoming water concentrates feeding activity, while a strong outgoing tide pushes fish into deeper channels and passes to ambush prey in the current.

Moon phase plays a role too, but not the one most anglers assume: satellite tracking shows tarpon diving as deep as 400 ft around full and new moons for offshore spawning, not daily feeding. Those moons bring bigger tides that move more bait — the real reason those days fish well.

Claims that a specific pressure range triggers a tarpon feeding frenzy are common online but untraceable to any actual study — treat them as folklore, not forecast.

Tarpon Diet

Diet shifts hard with size:

  • Larvae — drift as near-transparent plankton for about a month before settling out
  • Juveniles — copepods, mosquito larvae, and small aquatic insects, adding fiddler crabs and grass shrimp as they grow
  • Adults — mostly baitfish (mullet, sardines, menhaden, ladyfish, anchovies), swallowed whole, plus crabs and shrimp that make up a serious share of the diet on grass flats and estuaries — shell and all

Bait choice follows the calendar as much as the water: on Florida's west coast, pass crabs are the go-to from April through July, then live baitfish take over.

Tarpon Baits and Lures

Pass crabs. The signature spring-summer bait, netted from the grass and debris drifting out of a pass on the early outgoing tide, or bought instead. Pull the claws before rigging — it keeps the crab alive longer and your fingers safe. Hook through the shell tip or the pale spot on the belly, then let it drift naturally with the current instead of dragging it. Stop the drift every 30 seconds to let the crab rise, then free-spool another 30 to let it sink and swim.

Live baitfish. Threadfin herring, pilchards, and mullet, fished the same way — alive and moving with the current, never towed.

Lures. Not the main plan, but a real one. Boca Grande Pass has an established jig fishery — 4–6 oz lead heads with shad-style plastic tails, slow-swept through the deeper basins on a falling tide. Swimming plugs cover the same mullet profile: cast upcurrent of a bridge shadow line and just reel. Low light and off-color water draw the most strikes.

Setting the hook. Bites rarely announce themselves — you feel building pressure, not a strike. Sweep the rod to about 45 degrees and reel; the circle hook finds the jaw corner as the fish turns.

Tarpon Tackle

  • Rod — 7–9 ft, heavy power, fast action
  • Reel — 6,000–8,000 size spinning reel, sealed against saltwater, holding at least 250–300 yards of line
  • Line — 50–80 lb braid
  • Leader — 60–80 lb fluorocarbon, 6–8 ft; tarpon have no teeth but a jaw rough enough to fray lighter line
  • Hooks — circle hooks, 5/0–9/0. Florida law requires non-offset, non-stainless, barbless circle hooks with natural bait

A Florida mortality study on released tarpon found no significant survival difference between circle hooks and J-hooks — against the pattern in most other species. What mattered was whether the hook sat in the jaw or deeper in the throat, and the fish's condition at release. The circle-hook rule still has real value: it cuts deep-hooking risk; survival just depends on more than hook type.

Quick Tarpon Fishing Plan

Fish the temperature window (75–86°F, 24–30°C), work a pass on a moving tide, and put a pass crab or a live baitfish in front of the fish without dragging it.

The technique that separates a landed tarpon from a lost one has nothing to do with bait. The instant the fish jumps, drop the rod tip and point it at the fish — skip that, and its own weight coming down on tight braid throws the hook for you.
